Terrassa is the fourth city of Catalonia. With a population of 211,000 inhabitants, 60,000 are active workforce spread between 6,500 businesses and more than 13,500 self-employed people. It establishes itself as the more competitive and proportionally grown city in Southern Europe thanks to its excellent accessibility and strategic location.
The city has a high competitive economic structure, dynamic and diversified, that has been able to readjust to the present-day global economy, thanks to an accurate planning that combines local economic dynamism and development with a good quality of life for its citizens.
At present, Terrassa has 16 Business & Industry Estates occupying 430 hectares of industry land, which hold the activity of 1,300 businesses and employ 16,000 people. Because of its 97% occupation of productive land, the city has become Barcelona’s most important reserve of industry land within its Metropolitan area (after Barcelona, it is the second largest city with more industry dedicated occupied land area).
Therefore, to reinforce Terrassa’s industry role and to take on new business demand, in the next few years there are plans to develop 235 hectares more of industry land, by building 4 more Business & Industry Estates dedicated to those activities that are acquiring added importance within the productive process.
The best example to sustain this is the already project in course to build the Technological District north of the city. This is a strategic venture linked to the development of the North Fringe (Franja Nord), with more than 67,000 square metres planned for retail activities, and the conclusion of two large communication infrastructures that will strengthen the city’s strategic position, the Ronda del Valles and the extension of the FFCC rail network. This initiative seeks not only to take advantage of the existing relationship between some of the most innovative business projects that are being carried on in the city such as Catalonia’s Audiovisual Park, Technological Centre Leitat or the UPC’s Nexus Building, but also shows a city that wishes for added value activities.
On the other side of the city, Bellots II Business & Industry Estate, currently within its commercialisation phase, will bring another 90 hectares dedicated to productive activities (456,000 square metres net of land), becoming one of the biggest areas specialising in economic activities in Barcelona’s Metropolitan Region (RMB).
However, in the last few years the city has understood that not only is important to provide new businesses with more productive land, but also to enhance its quality so as to allow an increase of business competitiveness.
Hence, with this intent, Terrassa’s City Council created the local public company Foment de Treball SA, making Business & Industry Estates part of their local economic promotion policy. Projects like a Business & Industry Estates public information system (www.terrassa.cat/poligons) or the implementation of an up to date Estates’ management system are some of the few steps taken to support our business network
